Job Title Class teacher Responsible to: The College of Teachers
Main purpose of the post To teach the Steiner Waldorf curriculum to and provide organisational and pastoral care for a class of children between the ages of 6 and 14 years, with the expectation of remaining with the class for up to eight years from Class One (6/7 years) to Class Eight (13/14 years).
Specific Duties:
- Provide a balanced curriculum at a pace suitable to the children’s age and development, and according to the principles of education laid down by Rudolf Steiner, through Main Lessons and other lessons not taught by subject teachers.
- Nurture the healthy development of the children’s physical, social and cognitive capacities, ensure good work and study habits are developed, and maintain good discipline in the class so that learning can take place.
- Maintain the classroom to a high standard of cleanliness and aesthetics.
- Prepare the class for festivals and class plays and support subject teachers with this also.
- Organise and participate in class outings, trips and events.
- Organise and present parents’ evenings, and liaise and meet with parents when necessary
- Mark and evaluate pupils’ work.
- Liaise with subject teachers, learning support and curative staff when appropriate, and keep records and pupil files up to date.
- Write yearly pupil reports for parents and collate them with subject teachers’ reports.
- Interview new parents and children in liaison with other staff and the Admissions secretary.
- Organise materials for class use, liaise with those responsible for purchase and keep within agreed budgets.
- Share responsibility for supervision of all pupils during non-class hours within the school day.
- Undertake break duties as required.
- Cover for absent colleagues as required.
- Attend regular staff meetings, out of school hours meetings when necessary, and participate in work, study and Inset days during school holidays or weekends as required.
- Take on administrative tasks when inspired or required
- Uphold and enforce school policies and rules.
Person specification:
Essential ● An approved Steiner Waldorf Teaching Qualification (or equivalent appropriate experience)
● An interest in and knowledge of the anthroposophical basis of Steiner Waldorf education and its curriculum
● An ability to relate to and inspire children
● An artistic and imaginative approach to teaching
● Good literacy and numeracy skills
● Exceptional communication skills, both orally and in writing
● Good organisational and classroom management skills
● An ability to work both independently and as part of a team
● A sense of humour
Desirable: ● Proven, successful teaching experience in another Steiner Waldorf school
● Qualified Teacher Status
● Previous vocational/professional experience in a field other than teaching

Job Details
Main Location: The Edinburgh Rudolf Steiner School
Salary: £15,428 to £20,678 per annum depending upon previous Steiner/Waldorf experience. Paid monthly in arrears by bank transfer.
Hours of Work: Core Teaching hours are 8.35am until 4.15pm. Full time teachers will be available in School during these times.
Holidays: All holidays will be taken during the published holiday dates less in service, work days and any other days set by the College of Teachers.
Pension: After one year’s service all employees are entitled to join the School’s Pension Scheme. The School currently contributes 12.5% of the basic salary.
Notice: During the first year of employment one month’s notice is required. After the first year one full term’s written notice is required.
Probation: New teachers are subject to one year’s probation to assess their suitability.
Disclosure and Medical Checks:
All new appointments are subject to satisfactory completion of a check by Disclosure Scotland and a medical examination. Two references are also required.
