Class 7 Shines in Gardening Scotland Competition
23 June 2011 in School News
Pupils from Class 7 were delighted to receive a Silver Gilt Award in this year's Gardening Scotland Pallet Competition. Clubs and schools from across Scotland competed to create the most innovative garden that measured just 1m x 1m.
Under the expert direction of Foppe Jellema, Gardening Teacher, this year's entry focussed on the many uses and benefits of living willow. Pupils discovered how willow could be used for water filtration to purify a contaminated supply, how it prevents erosion on steep slopes due to its invasive root system and how it can regenerate itself which is especially useful in dry regions. It is also a versatile material used in the production of baskets and cricket bats and can even create a living tree house or play area for children.
Gardening is another unique element within the Steiner curriculum and helps our pupils to learn how their work has a direct and visual impact on their environment. Gardening lessons begin in Class 5 and allow pupils to tend their own plots and choose what to plant.
The School is also a keen supporter of the Royal Edinburgh Hospital Community Garden. Parents and pupils are invited to visit the gardens to assist with shared projects and spend family time together as volunteers.
