Cycle Friendly School Award

24 October 2011 in Tuesday Notice

The Edinburgh Steiner School is proud to announce it has received a Cycle Friendly School Award from Cycling Scotland.

This is a nationally recognised award open to all Primary Schools in Scotland who are committed to increasing the number of children cycling to school. The aim is to encourage cycling as part of a whole school culture to benefit both children’s health and their environment.

Our school was required to fulfil a number of criteria to receive the award including cycling proficiency training and the availability of suitable bike sheds for storage. The assessors also reviewed the number of pupils cycling to school as well as the initiatives in place to encourage our pupils further.

Among the initiatives recognised were the annual bike breakfast and our fundraising bike sale and maintenance morning.

Earlier this year, the Edinburgh Steiner School topped a survey about pupils who cycling to school. The annual “Hands up Scotland” school travel survey has been carried out across all Scottish local authorities since 2008. Every school in Scotland is invited to take part. The survey is designed to monitor trends and establish whether school travel plans and initiatives such as 20mph zones have had an impact.

The Edinburgh Steiner School topped the poll of 148 primary and secondary schools in the city after demonstrating that 15% of its pupils regularly cycle to school.
