GARDENING SCOTLAND ‘Pallet Gardens for schools’ competition
Mr Jellema and Class 7 took part in the Gardening Scotland ‘Pallet Gardens for schools’ competition last weekend in Ingliston show grounds. Their display contained a big root stump of a Yew tree that had grown in the school grounds for over 100 years. Many hands and many hours of work on this tree stump paid off with a Gold reward for the display. It was planted up with ferns, mosses and alpine flowers and guarded by a gnome. It attracted many spectators! Well done everyone.

FOOD FOR LIFE GOLD AWARD - The school and the PTA are delighted to announce that our lunches have been certified with the Soil Association’s prestigious Food for Life Gold Award. This award has required pupils, teachers and parent volunteers to meet rigorous high standards for organic content, food preparation and local sourcing of ingredients. We understand that we are one of only a tiny handful of organisations in Scotland to reach this standard, and the first individual school. Work to secure this award began over a year ago, when the PTA teamed up with Anne Jardine to improve the Class 12 lunches. It was continued and sustained by present Class 12 throughout the inspection and certification process. The baton has recently been passed to pupils in present Class 11, who are now assisted two hours a day on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays by a parent, Barbara Davidson. This award is due recognition for the efforts of all involved to continue to improve our school experience. Alistair Pugh Michele Goldie.

A Creative Curriculum - how seventy years of Steiner education in Scotland can help put Curriculum for Excellence into practice. As part of our work to contribute to the wider educational debate in Scotland and to raise awareness of Steiner education, today we are welcoming around 50 state school teachers and politicians to our school for an event to share Steiner teachers’ experience with state school teachers, as they put Curriculum for Excellence into practice. Our event will cover some of the key themes in Curriculum for Excellence, such as interdisciplinary learning, meeting a variety of learning styles and kinaesthetic learning, which are embedded in the Steiner educational approach and have been practised for many years by Steiner teachers. If you’d like more information, please contact Liz Murray on lizmurray@lumison.co.uk.
REVIEW: Class 8 play: ‘The Merchant of Venice’ by Kit Morrison
My experience of the class 8 play is a good one. Despite a few giggles and missing lines here and there everyone involved put 100% effort into making it work. I would like to say a big thank you especially to Carey Morning who was left a very small amount of time to make this play work and managed to pull it off. And thank you to Madam Maclean for helping us with pronunciations and speech. I am very happy to have been in the play and would like to say thank you to everyone who made it possible. Special thanks to Lucy Newton for the beautiful Venice set and props.

HAMILTON SCHOOL OF ENGLISH -Edinburgh is looking for caring and responsible host families
Young people from Europe, Russia -- indeed, from all over the world! -- will be visiting Edinburgh this summer, and the Hamilton School of English-Edinburgh is looking for caring and responsible host families to give these international visitors a chance to get to learn a bit about home life in Edinburgh. Although the school keeps them very busy with English tuition and activities for most of the time, when they have no school activities families can open their doors to give them a taste of Scottish life. Families are remunerated generously, and can host 1-4 pupils (twin rooms). Families provide breakfast and a cooked evening meal, but the school provides lunch (so no packed lunches are required). For families whose children are similar ages to the pupils (12-17), there is an invitation to join afternoon sports activities at the school's base, Merchiston Castle School. If you would like to host and you will be at home for 2-4 weeks between 4 July and 14 August, give the Hamilton School a call for more information: Mrs Darling, 440 3301. Persons of all ages with experience of parenting welcome.
CAMPERVAN/MOBILE HOME NEEDED - Please does anyone have a campervan that they would be willing to loan or hire at a reasonable rate to Susan (lolly pop lady) for 4 days in July, 8th to 11th July inclusive. I would cover insurance costs; I would only be travelling approx 100 miles at the most and would take very, very good care of your vehicle. If you can help please contact Susan at the gate or phone the office on 337 3410.
ROOM NEEDED - Professional lady seeks a room in shared household from early May until October so she can work locally on projects. Her children attended the school some years ago. Please contact Jackie Queally by e-mail: jac@celtictrails.co.uk

We live in Lyon, Matéo goes to school in St Genis-Laval and it's no problem for us to welcome a student from your school. FAMILY WANTING A HOUSE TO RENT -Nice country loving family consisting of myself, my husband, our 18 months baby and my mum, seeks a long term let on a farmhouse/country property. We need three or more bedrooms, a garden for the baby and also for growing fruit and vegetables. My husband is disabled and we receive housing allowance, giving us a budget of around £600 in the borders, £850 in Edinburgh and the Lothians. Due to my husbands fragile health and the need to settle our daughter in a secure environment we need a long term let. We can provide excellent references. We are a non smoking, non drinking, peaceful family who are only leaving our much loved home due to our landlord needing the building for other purposes. If you can help or know of anyone who can please contact us on 01968 660 237.
