Tuesday Notice no 10 autumn 2010

16 November 2010 in Tuesday Notice

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY - Circus Skills is looking for parent volunteers to help by assisting on a part time basis on Friday afternoons. You will be asked to guide and encourage the children in practice of skills. You don’t need to be able to juggle, but you might be able to learn to. Please contact Michael Ritchie mp_ritchie@yahoo.co.uk if you can help. The club runs from 1.30pm to 3.00pm.

CHRISTMAS MARKET: There are still quite a few spaces in the rotas. If you have not already done so, please sign up for a job to make sure that the Market runs as smoothly as possible. Thank you.
PRESERVES STALL: Class 2 is looking for generous contributions to the popular preserves stall. If you have donations ready, please hand them to Mute in the office. Many thanks!
Tin Cans for lanterns - We are looking urgently for empty unbashed tin cans (the size of tomato tins, not sweetcorn). They should have no sharp edges and be clean. If you are feeling very kind you could also take the labels off! Any number will be gratefully received by Mute in the office. Many thanks!

CHRISTMAS MARKET FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS
Information Sheets can be collected from the Christmas Market basket located in the School Office. This explains the financial arrangements for the market and should be read carefully by all those who expect to be provided with a cash float. Please note that all cheques accepted in payment should be made payable to 'ERSS Christmas Market'.
Expenses Claim Forms can also be collected from the Christmas Market basket. These should be completed, with any receipts firmly attached, and returned to the basket NO LATER THAN Tuesday 14 December. Thank you!

SOCIAL INCLUSION GROUP: Over the last summer term the existing “bullying group” has been transformed and renamed into “Social Inclusion Group” following a model at Vancouver’s Rudolf Steiner School. The idea behind this is to take away the stigma of “bully” and “the victim”, but rather trying to find ways to include and re/integrate both into their peer group.Currently 3 members of staff and 2 parents with experience in child group dynamics are meeting on a regular basis to set this exciting project in place. To identify children in need of support, class teachers are asking to place each of their children into concentric circles to see whether any child in the class is at the fringes and if there are any problems on a wider scale. We then try to identify creative ways to help.
As a school community one of our focuses is “community building” and we feel that looking into issues of peer dynamics between our children in a fresh and more holistic way plays an important part.

Political update - After many years of hard work, awareness-raising and lobbying, we are finally making some progress towards our aim of getting some public funding to allow Steiner schools in Scotland to become more socially inclusive. While the outcome still remains very uncertain, we wanted to let parents and friends at our schools know that representatives of all four Steiner schools in Scotland are in talks with Scottish Government officials and representatives of all four local authority areas to look at how our schools might receive some level of public funding. With a cut of around £1.8billion expected in next year's Scottish budget, we are working in difficult financial times - but there is strong political support for funding our schools and we are working with determination and optimism that we can achieve a breakthrough in this long held ambition.  We will be meeting again with the Government on December 6th and will keep everyone updated.  If you'd like more information, or to offer suggestions or expertise, then please contact Liz Murray on lizmurray@lumison.co.uk.ThanksLiz Murray & Alistair Pugh.

Community Garden consultation evening, 7-9pm, Tues 30th November, ERSS school hall
As the first year of the Royal Edinburgh Community Garden draws to a close, there will be an evening of consultation with anyone who has been involved (however much or little) - to look back at what worked, what didn't and how to make things even better next year.  There'll also be sessions on celebrating the seasons and learning new skills.  The event will include all the community groups and individuals who've been involved in the gardens, and will be held in our school hall.  Please bring finger food to share.  No need to let us know whether you're coming. Sonia and Liz.
