Teacher to Launch Book with Evening of Storytelling and Song
20 November 2009 in School News
English teacher Peter Snow has published a new collection of stories based around Midlothian’s famous Rosslyn Chapel. Peter has been taking pupils to the Chapel for many years to explore its famous carvings. He has drawn upon his experiences to create “A Rosslyn Treasury: Stories and Legends from Rosslyn Chapel.”
Peter explains: “I was inspired to write 'A Rosslyn Treasury' after visiting the Chapel as part of a Main Lesson with my Class 11 pupils (age 17 years). The basis for the class is the medieval epic poem, Parzival, which is about the Arthurian hero of the same name and his long quest for the Holy Grail.
"Nearly every surface of the Chapel is carved, displaying outstanding works of craftsmanship dating back as far as 1446. My pupils and I have always been captivated by the numerous myths, historical stories and legends which these carvings convey. After several visits (and some encouragement), I agreed to bring together 24 different tales into a single collection under the Rosslyn heading.
"Following two years of research, I hope to have captured some of the unique magic that this historic landmark conveys. The Chapel and its stories communicate an overwhelming sense of transformation so the theme of this new book is very much about change as part of a quest or journey.
Peter will be holding a special book signing event on 2nd December from 7.30pm in the School Hall, 60 Spylaw Road, Edinburgh, EH10 5BR. The evening will include refreshments, storytelling and song.
